Principles of Individual and Team Development

As coaches, as players, as people, and as a community:

 1. We are coachable and recognize the difference between constructive criticism, corrective feedback, and instruction based on the principles of teaching and learning.
  • We learn, develop, and improve every day in the classroom, on the training field, during scrimmages and games, through our life experiences, and by seeking continual personal and professional development. We are lifelong learners.

2. We are solution-focused individuals, teams, teammates, coaches, and people.
  • We are each responsible for, and contribute to the well-being of each other, our team, and our community, as individuals and a collective. We choose to practice a growth mindset and see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow as people, players, coaches, teams, and as a community dedicated to consistent improvement.
3. We understand that success is an outcome rooted in development involving a deeper understanding of ourselves, our process of learning, and the understanding of our game model and principles of development.
  • We understand learning, development, and improvement require the active practice of self-awareness, self-reflection, self-correction, self-belief, and active listening.
4. We are resilient and adaptable.
  • We understand that things will not always turn out the way we anticipate them to or wish them to and see this as an opportunity for growth and development. We never give up.
5. We are accountable.
  • We accept responsibility for our individual and collective actions and behaviors and the influence they have on ourselves, others, our team, and our community.
6. We advocate for ourselves.
  • We understand the importance of interpersonal communication and appropriately verbalizing our thoughts, feelings, and emotions to create a shared understanding of self to others to resolve challenges and accomplish our goals together.
7. We are dedicated.
  • We believe the season never ends and work year-round as a team of individuals to improve our personal best knowing that this will not only help us as individuals but will collectively help us accomplish our goals as a team and a community.
8. We make sacrifices for self and others.
  • We possess the personal drive to succeed and know it is more difficult to reach our goals through individual ambition alone. We believe we will accomplish our goals together when each person makes the conscious choice to think and act as a team first. We understand this will make each of us stronger and when we work for and with each other, we thrive together. Imagine being in a place where every person around you is working as hard as they can to help you succeed, as they work toward individual and collective success with you, knowing that by doing so we are helping each other to reach our larger collective goals as a team and a community.
9. We are respectful.
  • We speak with integrity and avoid using words or participating in actions that may be harmful to self or others intentionally or unintentionally. We understand the power of language and use our words to lift ourselves and those around us up to become the best version of ourselves through encouragement and a next play mentality. We understand the importance of character and integrity and the dangers of assumption and gossip. We believe in respecting ourselves by defining our own worth and value as people. We treat everyone and everything with care. We respect others by showing them we care about them. We actively listen to one another. We understand the value of difference and recognize the benefit of a culture where all are heard, cared for, and respected as individuals, and as a collective, and as a community.
10. We are responsible for our behaviors and actions.
  • We are responsible and accountable for our actions and behaviors and decisions on and off the field and understand we are not only representing ourselves but those we care about and who care about us. We accept the responsibility of consciously working to uphold the standards and principles outlined in our soccer community. We understand the impact a small group of dedicated and committed people can have on accomplishing larger goals by working together as a team.
